Last year, the city awarded grants to 12 organizations ranging from $3,500 to $15,000 to put on events or projects that bolster the arts in Stamford. Projects funded last year include: The Nutcracker put on by the Connecticut Ballet, The Carwin Park Summer Concert series, musical performances at First Presbyterian Church including Concerts on the Green, DanceFest 2018, an immersive program for young dancers taught at The Palace Theatre by world-renowned dancers, and various visual art workshops put on by Loft Artists throughout the year.
“We are lucky to have so many great arts organizations here in Stamford,” said Mayor David Martin. “They continue to do excellent, creative work that brings light and joy to our community. I am happy to support their efforts with these grants. Thank you to Thomas Madden and John Varamo in the Economic Development Department, and our new Arts & Culture Commission for their help administering the grants.”
Director of Economic Development Thomas Madden added, “The city’s investment into the arts is pivotal to developing a well-rounded cultural environment in Stamford. Each organization plays an important role in raising the bar for not just the city, but also the region.”
Mayor Martin’s dedication to the arts in Stamford was reinforced last year when he and the Board of Representatives created the Stamford Arts & Culture Commission. The mission of the Commission is to stimulate, facilitate, coordinate, and cooperate with arts and cultural organizations for the development of the creative, performing, and visual arts as well as cultural activities within Stamford.
Stamford Arts and Culture Commission Chairman Lou Ursone said, “The Stamford Arts and Culture Commission is proud to partner with the Mayor's Office in reviewing applicants for this year's CAPP program. Stamford is blessed with an extremely rich arts and culture community and we are so grateful to our city's leaders who see the value in funding these many enriching cultural endeavors.”
