The report covers the district’s progress in the areas of Talent, Academics, Climate and Operations. Additionally, to help members of our community feel more connected to our schools, the report features exceptional administrators and teachers—those who benefit our students—as well as outstanding students and alumni—those who have reaped the benefits of our district over the years.
The 2015-2016 Annual Report to the Community features four SPS administrators: 2016 NASQ/CT Clinical Social Worker of the Year and SPS Social Work Department Head Joe O’Callaghan, Principal Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) Tina Rivera, Principal Cloonan Middle School David Tate and Assistant Principal Springdale Elementary School Laura Lynam, all of whom have a deep roots in Stamford.
On the teaching front, the report celebrates 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year Stamford High School (SHS) Choral and Orchestral Director Gloria DiCamillo Sinaguglia, 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year First Finalist and SHS Band Director George Beratis, 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year Finalist Westhill High School (WHS) Math and Computer Science Teacher Chandan Sarkar, and 2015 NCC Distinguished Alumni Awardee and Curriculum Associate for Data Monitoring Rebecca Wilson.
This year’s featured students are AITE Seniors Mischael Anilus (Tufts University Class of 2021) and Emily Romero (Harvard University Class of 2021); SHS Seniors Mariel Barocas (Yale University Class of 2021) and Ismael De Los Santos (Cornell University Class of 2021) and WHS students Senior Vivek James (University of Pennsylvania Class of 2021) and Junior Brian Kaether.
Many of our alumni attribute the skills and knowledge gained during time spent in Stamford Public Schools to their current success. The following three are highlighted in this report, Judge of the Superior Court and SHS Graduate Gary White; One Acre Fund Policy Analyst and SHS Graduate Alexa Petersen; and Stanford University Graduate Student and AITE Graduate Christopher Kremer.
For the third year, SPS alumnus John Martin donated his time and photographic talent in the creation of the report.
