Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that the Connecticut Affiliate of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) recently selected Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) Senior Julia Kempton as a Connecticut Affiliate Winner of the 2019 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. AITE Teacher Sean Peterson nominated Kempton, who plans to study economics and computer science in college, currently works in the Computer Science department at UCONN Stamford and is a member of AITE’s multi-year, world-qualifying Odyssey of the Mind team.

According to NCWIT, the Award for Aspirations in Computing builds a talent pool for the growing technical workforce and helps academic and corporate organizations celebrate diversity in computing by honoring young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Award recipients are selected based on aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing; leadership ability; academic history; and plans for post-secondary education.

AITE Sophomore Adena Russel and Westhill High School Senior Danielle Crevecoeur earned recognition as Connecticut Affiliate Honorable Mention recipients. AITE Teacher Florina Merturi nominated Russel and WHS Teacher Chandan Sarkar nominated Crevecoeur.

Award recipients will be honored at an NCWIT event in Hartford this April.
